SAN ANTONIO, TX, December 11, 2013 – It was the Alamo City’s turn for some quality Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament action this past weekend with Rafael Perez and Matshark Tournaments bringing the 2013 Joboia Pro St. Phillip’s College.

With this being the Matshark’s last tournament of the year, Rafael Perez wanted to make sure it was enjoyable from your average competitor’s perspective but also fan-friendly for spectators when it came to brown and black belt action and thus he offered some prize money as incentive for top competitors.

Aside from the normal divisions Matshark also hosted a series of black belt super fights and a couple of black belt brackets were distinguished competitors like Robert Yamashita, Raul Jimenez and many others came to display their skills. The blackbelt fights were excellent, among the most distinguished athletes who took home medals and cash money prizes were Marcus Antelante. Gabriel Martins and Tony Aaron. Elite MMA brown belt, Julian Vega also competed in the black belt division and impressed all in attendance by defeating all of his black belt opponents to win his bracket. We always look forward to watching guys like Julian compete because they bring it and their fights are always exciting.

Speaking of exciting; the black belt divisions were extremely fun to watch, but the match of the day was fought by a 13 year-old. San Antonio’s own Marcus Rene Tonne, representing Champions Fight Factory, undoubtedly received the biggest cheers of the whole day during his fight with another teen who outweighed him by a good 50 pounds. Marcus was being outmuscled and was losing by points, but his heart and determination helped him pull through and defeat his much larger opponent with an improbable last minute armbar. Marcus displayed what real jiu-jitsu is truly about, he used leverage and momentum perfectly to make his opponent lose his balance and capitalize with a submission. Needless to say, we were extremely impressed with this young man.

Cody Hoffstetter was another athlete who impressed this weekend, winning double golds. The Pinnacle MMA/ GFTeam San Antonio product was on fire this Saturday, submitting all of his opponents in Gi and No gi. This feat is especially noteworthy because Cody had to move up a weight class to middle weight when there were not enough people to fill out his preferred light weight division. We would like to thank Cody for assisting us with filming duties during the super fights and to anyone else who was kind enough to hold a camera for us while important fights were going on at once. We work hard for you guys so it is always nice to have you give us a hand when we need it.

Check out some match videos below including most of the brown and black belt matches from the 2013 Matshark Jiboia Pro – 47 videos in all in this playlist totaling to about three hours of continuous grappling action for our BJJ fans.
