2013 Austin Open competes against Austin City Limits and delivers music to grapplers’ ears

AUSTIN, TX, October 7, 2013 – It’s yet another Monday following a successful BJJ tournament here in Texas with Fight to Win and World Grappling Circuit putting on their annual Austin Open event this past weekend at the Wilhelmina Delco Center in North Austin just off HWY 290 this past weekend.

Despite being held on the same weekend at the Austin City Limits music festival the event still held strong with the 2013 Austin Open drawing somewhere in the neighborhood of 450+ competitors to the mats from Central Texas, Houston, Dallas, Midland, Corpus Christi and beyond. The focus of the event was also on the new tournament structure/schedule implemented from Brett Boyce which was aimed at speeding up the overall efficiency of the tournament. With the whole thing being concluded start to finish in just under seven hours (end time: 3:45PM), it seems that most of those changes did shave some time, which is always a good thing.

As for the action on the mats, Seth should have complete results out this week as usual but it was truly a varied affair with some of the teams of note including Paragon, Gracie Barra, Nova Uniao, Next Generation, Enlightened Warriors, Elite MMA, John’s Gym, and Austin Eastside Elite. We’re sure we missed a few mentions but let’s just say a lot of teams came out to represent at the Delco Center.

The advanced divisions were pretty full as well with some standout matches of note including Julian Vega (Elite MMA) vs. Frederico Silva (GB) in a fast-paced match and MMA old-schoolers Chris Brennan (Next Generation) and Toby Imada (Austin Eastside Elite) putting on an exceptional matchup of their own.

Other standout competitors included Robert Yamashita (Elite MMA) and Thiago Macedo (RPBJJ) along with Chasity and Kayla Deleon (Revolution BJJ) in the women’s divisions.
