James Powell defends CDM welterweight belt; Jose Solis wins featherweight belt in controversial fashion

BRYAN, TX, September 2, 2013 – CDM Promotions returned to Bryan, TX this past Saturday night with Elite Amateur Combat 6 taking place at the Brazos Center in Bryan just a few minutes away from the Texas A&M campus in nearby College Station. With this being their second event in the area in the last few months, CDM was well supported with a turnout including some very passionate MMA fans from B/CS and further all there to cheer on the amateur fights of the evening.

The entire card was entertaining from start to finish. Among the Elite Amateur Combat 6 highlights; James Powell defended the CDM welterweight title in the night’s main event with an incredible barrage of punches from mount to put away Miguel Martinez. Powell displayed excellent ground and pound, and a killer instinct that was downright scary in his first fight back with the promotion since winning the title in a bout versus Michael Alvarez at Elite Amateur Combat 3 in June 2012. Powell has lost his next two following that bout but rebounded nicely with this win in Bryan.

The co-main event fight was for the 145lb title, which Jose Solis won in a controversial split decision over Windy Sport product, Randy McCullough. TXMMA staff in attendance, EAC promoter Rey Rueda and ring announcer Rev Bart all noticed Jose Solis tapping late in the second round from an RNC. Unfortunately the two taps were on McCullough’s shorts, but away from the ref’s line of vision. The fight continued and Solis ended up taking a split decision that was met with animosity from the crowd because one judge scored all three rounds 30-27 for Solis, a surprising estimation of the fight going against the grain of prevailing opinion.

In other news, Houston area MMA blogger Mark Carrillo made his amateur debut at Elite Amateur Combat 6 in a gritty battle against Raymond Nanez. A Bryan/College Station local, Carrillo came up short in his first MMA fight but showed incredible heart and an excellent German suplex in his first effort. Look for Carrillo to give fighting another go at 145lbs. as all signs point to him not being done in the cage just yet.

Other impressive fighters scoring victories at EAC 6 included Calvin Cooper (formerly with Silverback FC, now fighting out of Gold Team) and BVMMA’s Carver Bennett with both scoring first round stoppages in their bouts.

Congratulations to all the fighters who won and thank you to all the athletes who dedicated their time and effort to put on such a great show on Saturday night!

Here are the complete results from EAC 6.
