UFC Fight Night 27 Results – Condit beats Kampmann; Dos Anjos corrals Cerrone

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, August 29, 2013 – Welterweight Carlos Condit began his comeback tour last night in Indianapolis in the main event of UFC Fight Night 27 with a win over Martin Kampmann. The two had previously faced off in April 2009 with Kampmann earning the split decision over “Natural Born Killer” in his first UFC fight following his long stint in the WEC. With consecutive losses to Johny Hendricks and champion Georges St. Pierre heading into this bout, it was crucial that Condit find success and he did just that in the fourth with pinpoint combinations forcing the referee stoppage over a bloodied Kampmann.

In the co-main event of the evening Donald Cerrone (like Condit, also from Jackson’s MMA) did not do as well in falling victim to a streaking lightweight divisional contender in Rafael dos Anjos. The Brazilian opened the bout aggressively and took control with his striking in this oen while “Cowboy” was mostly content trying to attack from his guard to no avail. With the win, Dos Anjos is now coming dangerously close to knocking on the door of top title contender status in the crowded 155 lbs. division currently ruled by champion Benson Henderson, who takes on Anthony Pettis at UFC 164 this coming Saturday in defense of his title.

Texas vets drop bouts – Brian Melancon bested by Kelvin Gastelum; Takeya Mizugaki decisions Erik Perez; McDaniel losses to Brad Tavares

Gutsy Houstonian Brian Melancon (Paradigm Training Center) fell victim to a streaking fighter in TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 27. It seemed like Gastelum was almost a bigger version of him with his aggression in this one. The TUF vet pressed the action from the get-go with a double-leg takedown attempt (that was defended well by Melancon) and he didn’t stop from there immediately moving forward with a few punch combinations that found their mark. A left, right, uppercut series dropped Brian and the 21 year old prospect Gastelum jumped on him right away to take the rear-naked choke for the win.

Earlier on in the evening former McAllen-based (RGV) standout Erik “Goyito” Perez dropped a close split decision to Takeya Mizugaki in their bout. Both fights had their moments in this one but it was Mizugaki who edged things out with a few stiff counter right hands that bloodied Goyito’s nose along with some superior grappling in the third.

Likewise Wichita Falls, Texas native Bubba McDaniel dropped his first official UFC bout to Brad Tavares following seven official wins in a row.

Court McGee earns second straight win over Robert Whittaker

Rounding out the main card on FOX Sports 1, TUF Smashes winner Robert Whittaker was unable to build on the momentum of his last win over Colton Smith in his fight versus another TUF winner in Court McGee at UFC Fight Night 27. Whittaker’s boxing was on point early in this one but McGee just kept walking forward in trademark fashion to earn his points en route to the decision win.
