Matt Hobar and Bubba Bush Pick Up Legacy Titles; Confirm Blue Chip Status And Bright Future In Major League MMA

HOUSTON, TX, July 21, 2013 – Two new champions were crowned last night at Legacy Fighting Championship 21 in Houston with the event giving rise to the organizations latest titleholders in the middleweight and bantamweight divisions.

In the main event of the evening Matt Hobar was able to best Angel Huerta midway through the first round to claim his belt. Fighting out of Octagon MMA in Dallas, “Crowbar” Hobar has long been thought of as one of the state’s premier prospects considering his scholastic wrestling background and almost seamless transition into MMA some years back. This win over Huerta now confirms that he could be up there with the best.

As for specifics, the fight lasted about three minutes into the first round. Angel seemed amped up and ready to go from the get-go, looking to use his speed to overcome the wrester. Matt Hobar would stay composed however and score the early takedown. Angel would work back up to his feet momentarily but would quickly find himself back the ground with Hobar mounted on him. Matt would quickly transition to the back and finish the fight by rear naked choke to score his 8th MMA win and the Legacy bantamweight title.

In the co-main event of the evening BVMMA’s Bubba Bush finally erased the last bit of lingering stench from his May 2012 disqualification loss to Artenas Young but soundly defeating Larry Crowe for Legacy’s vacant middleweight title.

Like Huerta after him, “Tae Kwon” Crowe would look to use his own speed and striking ability to stop his wrestling-based opponent but it was not to be in this one as Bubba Bush was simply able to floor him anytime he had the opportunity. Larry survived admirably in the early going, showing resiliency under Bush’s relentless top pressure and ground-and-pound. By the time it got to the middle of the second round however, referee Kerry Hatley had seen enough as Crowe was controlled on the ground so well that he was rendered unable to intelligently defend himself any more. The end came at the 2:41 mark of round two to give Bush his first major MMA title and perhaps a future shot at the UFC if his post-fight interview comes to fruition.

Leonard Garcia and Holly Holm Successful in Legacy FC Debuts

Legacy Fighting Championship 21 saw the debuts of two notable fighters coming in last night with Leonard Garcia and Holly Holm both making their first appearance with the promotion.

The event marked the Texas return of WEC and UFC veteran Leonard Garcia, a Plainview native. His fight with Rey Trujillo proved to be “as expected” with the two fighting fast and furiously throughout three rounds of action. Like all his other fights, Trujillo would come out like a ball of fire, hitting Leonard with his trademark sidekick and scoring the early takedown to establish control. He’d have Garcia on his heels to win the first round. It was more of the same in the second with the two exchanges strikes and takedowns throughout the entire frame. Finally in the third and final round, Leonard came out more aggressively, setting up a beautiful head kick that saw Trujillo crash to the canvas. He would survive momentarily there on instinct alone but Leonard never let up and put in a barrage of punches that forced the referee stoppage just 24 seconds into the final round.

As for “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holly Holm, she might have scored the most impressive debut of the entire evening at Legacy Fighting Championship 21. The women’s boxing all-time great put in a workman-like performance for the most part against recent Fallon Fox opponent Allana Jones and yet the fight culminated in the most spectacular of endings. From the opening bell Holm would use her pugilistic prowess and some well-timed kicks to stay in her opponent’s face. To her credit Jones held though and never sought to take the fight to the floor in this one. Unfortunately for her it was a bad decision as Holly got more and more comfortable and found her timing well enough to land a well-timed left high kick that dropped her opponent like a sack of potatoes. Holly would follow her down for strikes but the ending was rudimentary as her one CroCop-like high kick was all she needed to secure victory in this one.

NCAA Wrestling Champion Darrion Caldwell Shows Well-Rounded MMA Skillset; Jonathan “Hulk” Harris Completes Winner’s Circle From LFC 21 Main Card

Elsewhere on the main card, NCAA champ and Rahway, NJ native Darrion Caldwell showed that he’s graduated to more than just a wrestler-fighting-MMA in his bout with Gerzan Chaw in their bantamweight bout. Taking on his most well-rounded opponent yet, Darrion proved he’s getting to be well-rounded himself – on the feet and on the ground. He’s definitely not your run-of-the-mill lay-and-pray guy and proved it in this one by bouncing off the cage on several occasions to land strikes and takedowns. With his superior athleticism it will be interesting to see what he can accomplish here in the near future – including a potential run at the title now held by new champion Matt Hobar.

Closing out the main card was Jonathan Harris finding his way back into the win column with a win over veteran Matt Rogers. “Hulk” would try to close distance over the taller fighter almost immediately in this one and wore him down with pressure and takedown attempts before coming in aggressively with strikes in the second to put him and down and score the TKO to move to 7-3 overall.
