Legacy FC 17 Results and Recap – What’s Next for San Antonio’s Winners? We Explore Probable Matchups

SAN ANTONIO, TX, June 6, 2013 – So Legacy Fighting Championship 17 came and went this past weekend in San Antonio. Held at Cowboys Dance Hall (home of amateur MMA promotion Cowboys Extreme Cagefighting), this edition of Legacy FC could quite possibly have qualified as it’s “Most Texas” ever considering it was held in an arena that doubles for us in livestock and rodeo shows.

In the main event of the evening hometown favorite Pete Spratt went into the fight looking to prove that, at 42 years of age, he’s still got a lot of mileage left on those leg kicks of his. He was originally set to take on Evangelista Cyborg but instead got Dan Hornbuckle instead after the Brazilian pulled due to personal reasons.

A Bellator and Sengoku veteran fighting out of American Top Team, “Handler” Hornbuckle did just that in handling Spratt for the unanimous decision in their fight. It was a spirited contest played entirely on the feet with both looking to make a statement with their kickboxing but in the end Hornbuckle’s 83” reach was just a little too much for the Texan.

Not sure what is next here but I would venture Mick Maynard and crew may want to sign Dan on for a few more fights as he’s clearly as top-caliber a talent as here is currently not in the UFC. Future fight prospects with guys like champion Jeff Rexroad and Jorge ‘Macaco’ Patino do seem like very interesting ones indeed.

In the co-main event of the evening Jared Rosholt came back from his title fight KO loss to current champ Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis with a dominant and bloody three-round decision over another local in San Antonio police officer Richard Odoms. Also known as “The Black Eagle,” Odoms hung on valiantly throughout the course of the fight despite being viciously bloodied and lacerated but had no answer for the wrestling chops of the 3x NCAA All-American. Not sure what is next here for either man considering the dearth of in-house talent at heavyweight but Rosholt does have one more fight on his Legacy deal so we’ll see who they put him against next – Schoonover? Villegas? Mitchell? Who else is out there?

As for the rest of the main card, what it did was serve well to showcase up-and-coming young talent who will no doubt look to build on this and create an exciting future in Legacy FC and beyond.

The first is Kevin Aguilar. Fighting out of Team 515 in Longview (East Texas), “The Angel of Death: had quietly shot up to a 6-0 pro record including wins over Matt Hunt and Rey Trujillo prior to last Friday night. He would then go in to LFC 17 to take on his most experienced opponent yet in Austin’s Nick Gonzalez. He made the most of his opportunity by proving to be the aggressor over three rounds of action to secure the unanimous decision and win his seventh straight. There’s a whole dearth of talent in the Legacy featherweight division still all looking to fill the championship shoes of UFC-departed Daniel Pineda so he won’t be short of opponents. Could he step right into the mix including Matt Hobar, Angel Huerta, and Nelson Salas among others? He might get there soon enough but some of the interesting names we’d love to see him take on at this juncture of his career (and might make for some exciting fights) include guys like Steven Peterson and Alex Black.

Up next, Beyonce didn’t perform and the lights didn’t go out in this one but the Rodriguez Bowl at least delivered a finish when San Antonio’s Ray Rodriguez beat New Braunsfels’ Ray Rodriguez by armbar in their battle of the namesakes. “The Judge” now moves to 3-1 as a pro and the featherweight will be looking to fight again as soon as Legacy’s Corpus Christi card scheduled for May 31^st.

Speaking of Corpus Christi, CC native Patrick Ybarra made his Legacy debut at #17 in spectacular fashion with a TXMMA submission of the night flying armbar win over local fighter Billy Buch. It was the fourth straight armbar win for “The Juggernaut” who’s quickly turning into the male version of Ronda Rousey with the manner of which he keeps finishing fights. We’re sure he too will be looking to fight in Corpus come May 31^st and a matchup between him and the aforementioned Ray Rodriguez would make plenty of sense if not fireworks at the bay.

The main card was concluded with yet another TXMMA Knockout of the Night award for 2012 KO of the Year Winner Rey Trujillo. This time it was James “Deuce” King who played the part of unwilling victim in the first round. What’s next for Trujillo? Who knows really? The guy keeps taking short-notice fights but he does seem like he’s back on the upswing again with his current 13-10 record. Definitely somebody plenty of these up-and-coming 145’ers may not want to face but we’d love to see him put some more of these would-be contenders to the test.
