Legacy Fighting Championship 14 Recap, Results and Photo Gallery

HOUSTON, TX, September  17, 2012 – AXS TV’s Legacy Fighting Championship 14 took place last Friday night in Houston. It was another successful event In front of the hometown crowd for the Houston-based promotion highlight by Houston Police Department gang task force investigator Jeff Rexroad winning the interim welterweight title over undefeated Brazilian Lucas Pimenta with a second-round comeback submission dubbed “the Rexangle” that’s certainly hands-down our TXMMA Submission of the Night.

Jeff Rexroad now awaits the return of incumbent welterweight champ Jorge ‘Macaco’ Patino – the man he was supposed to challenge for the belt prior to an unfortunate knee injury that will sideline him for the near future. Rather than elect to go under the knife, Patino has foregone the surgery option and will look to rehab the knee with this goal of taking on Rexroad as his primary motive down the line.

As for the rest of Legacy FC 14, the main card also featured an upset of sorts as tough Missouri-based wrestler Josh Sampo was able to win a unanimous decision over longtime WEC/UFC veteran Antonio Banuelos. It was a busy bout for both flyweights but Josh was able to win out combining timely takedowns and an effective striking attack to keep his experienced opponent at bay and win the bout across three rounds.

Steven Peterson and Cody Williams had themselves one hell of a war across two rounds just as we predicted with Beaumont’s Williams using his striking to put the DFW-based Peterson on his heels early. Cody even dropped him a few times but Peterson would recover quickly and keep his composure until Cody’s ferocious pace slowed just enough for ‘Ocho’ to begin imposing his will and use his technical advantage on the ground – attacking with armbars, etc. Eventually it was the omoplata that got Peterson the win in what we would label as our TXMMA Fight of the Night.

Another close contender for fight of the night featured a pair of debuting pros in Louisiana-based Matt Schnell and Cleveland, TX based Ryan Hollis. The two flyweights went at it like seasoned pros across three rounds of action. Both guys had their moments on the feet while on the ground the two battled stylistically with Schnell looking for the takedown and hanging on to the top position while Hollis was happy to threaten submissions and even strike effectively from the bottom.

Many cried robbery when the decision was announced for Matt Schnell and they may have had a good case for it – seeing as how Hollis finished stronger. If this were Pride FC rules, Hollis may have taken this one. Unfortunately for him, this bout was scored differently over three rounds of action and was definitely razor-close either way but hats off to Schnell for walking away with the victory in his pro debut.

Closing out the main card, Derrick Krantz, Lester Batres, and Darrion Caldwell all scored convincing victories in their bout. Batres in particular was impressive in his first-round TKO over local powerhouse Jonathan Harris to earn TXMMA KO/TKO of the Night honors.
