Tournament Recap – July 14th BJJ Classic delivers no points/no time limit competition format to DFW area

DALLAS, TX, July 17, 2012 – The Dallas-Fort Worth area saw their latest dose of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament action this past weekend with Christopher Story and Ronnie Chesko hosting the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classic (BJJ Classic) at De Zavala Middle School in Irving, TX this past weekend.

Putting a different spin on the typical tournament experience and going back to the sport’s roots a little bit, this competition put an emphasis on finishing with its “no points/no time limit” format.

“BJJ is about submitting your partner, not manipulating points systems and time limits. It’s about strategy, technique and endurance,” said event organizers. “We started the BJJ Classic project when we realized how far BJJ tournaments have deviated from what traditional BJJ training was meant to be.”

Competitors from all around Dallas showed up to partake in this BJJ Classic experience, including students from teams such as Alvarez BJJ, Genesis BJJ, Marcelo Garcia Dallas, Peak Performance, Evolve BJJ, Octagon MMA, New Lineage BJJ, North Texas MMA, and many others.

As for the action on the mats, it was intense. Full results are forthcoming but we do have some competitors to highlight for their performances on the day.

In the purple belt open class finals, Rashad Salahuddin (Evolve BJJ) and Blake Dvorak (North TX MMA) fought for twenty solid minutes. Dvorak came close to finishing the match via armlock a few times but in the end, it was Salahuddin who was able to synch on a slick lapel choke to win the division.

Likewise in the blue belt open division, Anthony Bedel (Octagon MMA) and Cooper Cardinale (Alvarez BJJ) faced off in the finals with Cardinale able to capture divisional gold courtesy of a timely loop choke.

Overall Story and Chesko labeled the tournament a success and said they look forward to paving the way for a new frontier of BJJ competition with their innovative submission-focused format with no point and no time limits.

The BJJ Classic will be back in the Dallas area on October 20th with registration available to kids, teens, and adults.
