IMKF 3 Pre-Fight Interview – Edgar Verdin (Silverback Fight Club)

Tell us a little bit about how you got into MMA.

I ran into Jason Carter at Baybrook all. He ask me to try it so I did. I just enjoy competing. That one on one rush when they shut the doors is priceless!

What do you do for a living outside of the sport?

I’m husband, dad, & brother. I’m also a pipefitter by trade.

You’re training at Silverback now right? What’s your training environment like?

It’s rugged & tough over there, which is my kind of gym. I train with the gorillas at the Silverback Fight Club which hella fun. I train with the top two heavyweights in Houston, Derrick (Lewis) & Dale (Mitchell). Plus Coach Tony (Orozco) is one hell of a coach who pushes you 24/7 & JT (Mendez) one of the best boxing coaches I meet.

How would you describe yourself as a fighter style-wise?

I’m pretty much a boxer with some Muay Thai. I love to keep it standing but for some reason my opponents like to hug it out. Expect war every time!

Where do you see yourself going as a fighter?

IMKF been taking care of me so ill like to stick with them but truth is Legacy runs H-Town so I would enjoy fighting there too.

If you couldn’t be a fighter, what do you think you’d be doing with your time?

Honestly that’s a hard question & I have no idea; maybe I’d be a full time student, full time daddy or street pharmacist.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years… hopefully a married, champ, & full time fighter.

Any thoughts on your fight with Larry Hopkins?

No thoughts really. He called me out so now we fight. I expect him to do a lot of hugging but I think I’ll KO him quick.

What’s next for you after this?

Maybe 170 in the future so I’m gonna be out for a bit. I also start school in August to finish my career but I’ll be around to corner some of our guys in some of the amateur shows.

Any last words before tomorrow night?

I wanna thank God because without him nothing is possible. Coach Tony & JT for all their help, all my gorillas, my manager Frank Salinas Top Line, sponsors Jarhead Barber Shop, Anxiety Rush…… Hardwork & Dedication crew!
