4OZ Fighter Kristy Kester seeking to earn her first title belt this Saturday at Ascend Combat: Mayhem 2

Kristy Kester

SHREVEPORT, LA, May 18, 2012 – This Saturday night, College Station’s Kristy Kester (4OZ Fight Club) will go for her first amateur title at Ascend Combat: Mayhem 2, scheduled for the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, LA – one of the most aesthetically pleasing venues around for MMA fans in Northern Louisiana and Northeast Texas.

For 24 year old Kristy, this contest will actually take her full circle in her very young career. The former race car driver / Texas A&M pre-med student actually made her debut for the Kim Cole Addison-led promotion back in December of 2010 with a first round TKO win over Skye Martin.

Since then, she scored another big win at the Legacy Amateur Series versus another popular Texas women’s amateur MMA fighter in Corpus Christi’s Jordan Gaza little over a year ago in February 2011. It was a highlight fight for her that had many talking about her potential. It also led to her first title shot at Legacy against Monica Earnshaw last July.

That turned out to be a grueling, hard-fought contest that saw the mettle of both women tested. Kester would lose the split decision in that one but not her desire to succeed in do well in the sport of MMA.

Rather than rest, the consummate competitor jumped right back into training and has been honing her craft ever since – getting in the gym as much as her schedule would allow while testing her evolving skill set in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

Kester vs. Earnshaw, July 2011

Feeling better than ever, she’s eager to jump back into the cage this Saturday night and show those improvements.

It’s her hope that all the work she’s put in over the past year will allow her to earn a title this weekend rather than suffer another defeat in the Ascend Combat: Mayhem 2 co-main event.

In order to get there, she’ll have to get past Andrea Lee, a 1-1 fighter who’s split her bouts in the Ascend organization – losing to 2011 TXMMA women’s amateur of the year Jade DeHaas in her debut but rebounding with a scintillating TKO of Paige Penn this past March to earn her own shot at the title.

Overall this should be one to watch as both Kristy and Andrea seek to prove themselves as up-and-coming prospects to watch on the regional women’s MMA scene.

Notable Texas and Louisiana up-and-comers do battle in main event

Kevin Aguilar

In addition to Kester vs. Lee, another exciting clash between Texas and Louisiana reps will take place in the main event of the evening when top up-and-coming Longview, TX based pro Kevin Aguilar (Team 515) takes on Baton Rouge, LA resident Calvin Miller (Gladiators Academy) in a lightweight bout.

Known as “The Angel of Death,” Aguilar has lived up to his fearsome-sounding moniker ever since turning pro in December of 2010. He’s won all five of his bouts since then including a second round submission over Houston’s Rey Trujillo in his last bout. With fifteen amateur bouts to his record as well, this well-experienced fighter should be one to watch not just in the area but in the entire region as one potentially destined for big things.

He’ll have to get past the 3-2 Miller in order to stay on the same track. The Baton Rouge native does hold two losses as a pro but both were to experienced opponents in Brock Kerry (8-6) and Donnie Bell (6-1). Like his opponent, he also spent plenty of time honing his skills in the amateur ranks to the tune of a 6-1 record so expect him to put up an exciting challenge against his highly-touted opponent.
