Analyzing Legacy FC’s latest moves and acquisitions – Recent growth a sign of things to come

Legacy FC President Mick Maynard

HOUSTON, TX, April 26, 2012 – Move over Dana White and Bjorn Rebney, Houston’s own beloved Mick Maynard is coming your way. Okay that may be a bit overstated and the ever so humble Legacy FC front man would surely rather shy away from such comparisons but the fact of the matter is that his organization sure has been making moves towards that upper echelon of the MMA landscape as of late.

Within the past two weeks alone the organization has announced a bevy of signings to beef up their 2012 lineup of events. First it was former OSU wrestler and top heavyweight prospect Jake Rosholt signing on to face Houstonian Derrick Lewis for the vacant heavyweight title. Then came another big acquisition in well-traveled former IFL champ Jay Hieron, a fighter many were surprised to see leave Bellator after having only lost to Ben Askren in four fights with the organization. As if that weren’t enough, it was announced earlier this week that outbound 2x UFC vet Junior Assuncao and former WEC champ Jamie Varner would be joining LFC as well for fights in the near future.

All these roster moves only add to earlier free agents signings like Carson Beebe and Robert Drysdale to go along with past appearances by other notable fighters like Gerald Harris, Pat Audinwood, and Pete Spratt.

Not a bad run-up of publicity for Legacy headed towards their next event, LFC 11, scheduled for exactly two weeks from now on Friday, May 11th.

In light of these recent pickups, many from the local MMA Community commented that this was yet another upping of the level for Maynard’s Legacy and the Houston MMA scene, yet another milestone for an organization that’s checked several big ones off the list over the past two years.

That’s definitely well and true but the truth is that is something bigger than all things local. This type growth has beeen inevitable ever since the promotion made the move towards HDNet in hopes of capturing the natural audience.

Houston’s always had talent (e.g. UFC fighters Daniel Pineda and Andrew Craig, both LFC veterans) and Legacy has done a fine job of showcasing them, even elevating their stature so that they could make that leap to the top. Now it’s Legacy’s turn to make that same type of career jump so-to-speak with these recent signings as simply another precursor of things to come.

If you recall back to earlier this month, another piece of news involving Legacy was announced with their signing an extension with HDNet (soon to be re-branded as AXS.tv). That came at exactly the same point that Maynard and crew brokered a deal with the Europa Get Fit and Sports Expo along with Dollamur’s Scott Templeton, a move that will make LFC the first pro MMA show to play host to a fight night in concert with the giant bodybuilding and fitness expo that regularly draws massive crowds all around the country wherever they go. That deals kicks off when Europa makes its way to the Dallas Convention Center on August 17th. LFC 13 will take place that night as part of the event and while we haven’t gotten confirmation of future plans to tour with the show, there’s a high likelihood that a successful debut could lead to the organization hitting the road with Europa for future dates that include October in Phoenix as Europa’s next stop.

So where’s the bottom line in all this?

The main point for now is that followers can expect more things to come from Legacy in the near future. They’ll have no choice. Their growth demands necessitate it, as do HDNet’s brass and all the venues they will be moving to in cities like Dallas and Phoenix – cities that will no doubt be clamoring to see their own homegrown stars do battle in LFC’s cage just like Houston’s fans have been calling for (and receiving) over the past few years.

For all you fans outside of Texas reading this, make sure to keep an eye on these guys. Legacy FC is going to be an increasingly bigger player nationally as time goes along with Maynard seeking to make his baby more than yet another regional success. And for all the local fans out there, expect more fighters, bigger fights, and even more surprising news from LFC in the near future.

The excitement is only now just beginning.
