Legacy Amateur Series 8 – Highlight Performances

Hard Head Hitter dominates to earn Legacy Amateur Welterweight Belt

With both Levi West and Charlie Ontiveros boasting as large and loyal of a fan base as can be found on the amateur level and having the skills and records to back it up, it was easy to build excitement for this fight. It was an interesting storyline too with West being touted as a future star with a pedigree that includes training with high-caliber fighters like Andrew Craig and those at Jackson’s MMA. Meanwhile, Charlie is the coach’s son from a small town who’s trained in traditional martial arts since childhood and has honed his own skills far from the limelight fighting at East Texas Indian Reservations.

This fight had a ton of people talking.

In the end, all the pre-fight posturing between the two fighters culminated in an exciting main event at LAM 8 that saw the Cleveland, TX native Charlie Ontiveros become the new Legacy Amateur welterweight champion. Hyperbole aside, Charlie flat out dominated this fight. He seemingly landed his lightning quick right hand and other counter strikes at will while sustaining very little (if any) damage  of his own, all while displaying phenomenal composure and takedown defense. The fight ending sequence saw Levi come in with his most impressive takedown attempt of the night only to see Charlie display terrific balance all while setting up the guillotine choke for the win.

This was a very impressive victory for the Hard Head Hitter as he put himself on the map definitely as one of, if not the best, amateur welterweights in the state. Be on the lookout for more great things from this worthy champion in the near future.

Jacob Silva takes LAM Flyweight Belt from Ricky Turcios with impressive performance

Silverback Fight Club’s Jacob Silva debuted way in February 2011 by fighting for a LAM title belt in his very first fight. 7 fights later and he’s come full-circle, winning the LAM flyweight title with a very impressive performance over the incumbent champion Ricky Turcios (Gracie Barra).

Like fellow new champ Charlie Ontiveros, Jacob was able to find success in large part due to the home he found for his right hand. That strike played a large part in this five-round fight, as did several thunderous body shots and impressive submission defense to go along with his endless cardio. Ricky displayed some good qualities of his own in this fight – namely his heart and chin. Silva landed some stiff strikes throughout this bout but Turcios kept coming forward. Despite Ricky’s best attempts on the ground though, Silva would not be denied in this one and refused to fall prey to the submission this time around.

Truly an impressive display Jacob Silva and one that showed a little bit of his maturity as a fighter with plenty more room to grow in the near future. For now, he leaves LAM 8 with the distinction of being Legacy’s 125 lbs. champion while making a statement that he’ll be one to contend with for anyone with aspirations to do some work in this weight class.

Female fighters put on a show; Plethors of other exciting performances on the undercard

As seems to be customary with female bouts contested in the Houston area, Stephanie Alba and Ashley Meza succeeded in putting on an absolute show in their three round bout. Meza came into this bout known for her striking while Stephanie has been recognized for her technical prowess on the ground as a Tony Torres-Aponte trained BJJ player. Stephanie proved she has all-around MMA skills in this one though, showing enough savvy on her feet to get in and exchange until she was able to take the bout down to where she was most comfortable. Alba bloodied her opponent’s nose in this one with a consistent ground and pound attack that would earn her the unanimous decision.

A ton of other fighters also impressed on the undercard.

HHH’s Ryan Hollis was able to use his significant height advantage to dish some flash and score a huge win over Bush Ban’s Hugo De La Fuente.

Up-and-coming Elite MMA middleweight Trevin Giles was able to stay composed through several Anderson Silva-like front kicks by 6’4” Micah Williams before delivering a thunderous right hand that dropped the Gold Team giant before coming in and finishing the fight off with strikes on the ground in under a minute.

The list goes on and on. Check out the rest of the action via  a comprehensive photo gallery on our TXMMA Facebook Page coming soon.
