HOUSTON, TX, April 5, 2012 – Mixed martial arts action returns to Northwest Houston this weekend with CDM Promotions hosting Elite Amateur Combat II at the North West Indoor Soccer Center this Saturday night.
As it stands now, the event is slated to feature 9 amateur bouts including 2 bouts featuring active duty military fighters from Ft. Hood making the trip to H-Town to challenge for the promotion’s lightweight and featherweight belts. As is such, any spectators with a military ID will receive 50% off the standing $20 general admission ticket in support of the troops.
Let’s take a look at some of the noteworthy fights to look forward to on this card:
In the main event of the evening, Fort Hood Combatives fighter Phillip “The Peacemaker” Platt (2-1) takes on John Hayden of Kingwood MMA for the CDM lightweight belt. We last saw Platt making short work of Brandon Hanna (Team Unleashed) with a first-round TKO in San Antonio’s Premiere Combat Group event just last month in an impressive performance while the 1-4 Haydon was on the receiving end of yet another TKO in his last cage appearance at Cage Combat 7 this past January. Given their current records, Platt should be expected to walk in as the prohibitive favorite in this one as he seeks his first title at the amateur level.
Speaking of titles, the co-main event 145 lbs. title fight between Beaumont’s Joel Scott (3-1) and another soldier in Brian Sullivan (2-0) may just be our most anticipated fight of this entire event as both these guys may be prove themselves to be legit pro prospects down the road. Like his teammate Phil, the active-duty soldier Sullivan fought at the PCG event at Cowboys Dance Hall last month in San Antonio, taking out Zachary Balderas to gain his second win in impressive performance. Meanwhile, Joel lost a tough one at Texas Rage in the Cage 13 against Ricardo Palacios after winning his 3 straight fights to start his career. Now fighting in his second title fight in a row, expect Joel to be supremely motivated as he looks to resume his winning ways.
As for the rest of the card, it features a lot on unfamiliar names with debuting fighters making up the bulk of the event. We’re expecting exciting fights nonetheless with greener fighters often fighting with reckless abandon as they look to prove themselves in MMA competition for the very first time.
