Houston’s “Black Beast” Derrick Lewis fights this Friday night; Taking on Justin Frazier at RFA 2 in Nebraska

HOUSTON, TX, March 27, 2012 – This Friday night, one of Houston’s biggest MMA prospects (and we mean this literally) travels way up north to do battle in the Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA) when Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis travels to Omaha, Nebraska to face undefeated Justin Frazier in a heavyweight bout that could be pivotal for his career.

It’s been a hectic 3 months since the Silverback Fight Club trained Lewis last fought in Fight to Win’s Paramount Prize Fighting event in Denver, Colorado. Facing local favorite Jeremiah Constant in defense of the title he won from now-ProElite fighter Ryan Martinez back in July of 2010, Derrick left Colorado with a no-contest instead of a win after an errant blow to the back of the head cracked his opponent’s skull, rendering him unable to continue.

Since then it’s been a whirlwind for Lewis as he’s scrambled on many different fronts from finding fights and training partners to picking up a day job and trying to make it day-to-day.

“I feel good headed into this fight,” he says optimistically before also relaying some of the hardships he’s faced in getting ready for this fight.

“This wasn’t the best training camp and it’s hard for me to find good training partners. I haven’t really had a good training camp into a fight since July of 2010. I’m going to keep it real… I know a lot of guys get these interviews and lie about everything, saying how hard they train and how good of shape they’re in…Then they lose and it’s like the truth comes out. But anyways, I feel good. I’ve had enough fights to know how much training I need to kick someone’s ass. I may have over-trained for this guy already!” <laughs>

Getting more serious, Derrick will be headed to Omaha with cautious respect for his opponent Justin Frazier, his second and final opponent after a planned bout with UFC vet Justin McCully for the event fell through. “He seems like a pretty tough guy and I know he’s coming to fight but I’m coming to kill,” says the Black beast.

Already Lewis has plans to fight for Bellator for the second time on May 18th in Lake Charles should he get past Frazier. A win there and he says there may be talks about a three-fight deal with the organization.

Not wanting to put the cart before the horse, it’s one fight at a time for Derrick beginning this Friday night at RFA 2.

“I would like to thank my coach Tony, my Silverback family, and my boys Larry Crowe and Dale (Mitchell). I also want to give a shout out to my manager Willy at Gorilla Management, Bonifitouchguy, and my boss Mr. Todd for giving me a job when everyone else said no. Also a special shout out to 4OZ Fight Club on their success and of course thanks to TXMMA.com and TheCageDoor.net. If it wasn’t for y’all’s help I wouldn’t have gotten any of this, so thanks guys.”
