HOUSTON, TX, March 23, 2012 – We recently had a champ to speak to Houston’s own Rey Trujillo about his upcoming fight this Saturday in Shreveport as he steps into the cage with Kevin Aguilar at Ascend Combat. With two fights already this year and a monumental knockout on HDNet behind him, this clash against his highly-rated opponent from Longview will be a pivotal one for him as he looks to extend his win streak to three in a row in preparation for his upcoming participating in the Ultimate Warrior MMA tournament beginning In South Texas in less than two months time.

Ascend Combat Interview – Rey Trujillo

First of all Rey, let’s talk about your last fight at Legacy. I think may have been the superman punch heard around the world with all the highlights I’ve seen of it going around. How did it feel to get that win?

It felt great man. It went faster than I expected… When it was all said and done it took a while to process, and I still had so much built up that I needed to release. I wish i could have fought again right after that! Guess you can’t complain though when you make the whole Arena say WTF! 

Coming off that big win in LFC, your 2nd in a row, I thought your next opportunity would be a high profile one. Why go all the way out to Louisiana to fight instead of waiting for one of the bigger shows to call?

It’s hard to get the next big opportunity when you don’t have a manager. Wish I did, and if I did I’m sure I could focus more on my training instead of when and where my next match is going to be. Sad story but it’s the way the cookie crumbles I guess. I guess I’ll just have to wait until Dana White says, “Man this guy doesn’t have a manager? He is his own manager? what’s his mobile, I’ll have to call him direct!” As far going to Louisiana, well I’m born to fight not taught to fight, though training does help  It boils down to the fact that I need the money and times are hard.

It’s not easy being a fighter and not having the proper support and sponsorships. If I could train three times a day and put together legitimate fight camps I’d be an unstoppable beast! I’ll get there one day and when I do, I’ll hit the zone and then it’s on….I’ll be world champ for damn sure. What people still don’t understand is that I’m the show, I’m an entertainer, and I do my job well. I think outside the box and I fight like no other fighter. The bigger the stage, the better I produce. I’m a gamer and I need the pressure to create greatness! Thru Bloodline MMA I will build an army of exciting fighters as well, a force to be reckoned with just like I am. Just wait and see…

What do you know about the promotion you’re fighting on this Saturday? How do you feel about this fight?

This Friday is huge! I think every upcoming fight is your biggest no matter the stage it’s on. I will crush. I will do my job in a extremely vicious and entertaining fashion! It shall be done. I’m not sure what opportunities well come from it but I guess I’ll have to get in contact with my manager Rey Trujillo over at Bloodline Sports Management afterwards. <laughs> I don’t know much about the show I’m fighting on but I did them a solid anyways. I don’t discriminate.

You’re taking this fight on short notice right? Anything different about preparing for a fight on the fly instead of way ahead of time? Does it make you more nervous at all?

There’s a lil’ bit of nerves but that’s normal, I’m usually pretty good with that. It’s not my first rodeo and I’ve fought on bigger shows. Short notice… I’m notorious for that. Got many losses by doing that and not being in shape… but when you got balls of steel it’s hard to say no, especially with no mentor to tell you otherwise. You live and learn and move on. I’m accustomed to learning things the hard way. It’s just my nature but it makes me better in the end.

What do you know of your opponent Kevin Aguilar?

I don’t know much about my opponent. Hopefully he ain’t no slouch. He should be a worthy opponent but I think he bit off more than he can chew!

Do you think Kevin has the ‘home field advantage’ at all? Shreveport is unfamiliar territory to you but he’s fought and won a title there before…

Unfamiliar territory, hometown advantage… <laughs> please!. I’m TRUDACHAMP, the King of the Cage. This is my world and every town is my town. I’m the center of my universe, this is my party, and I’ll be bringing my own cake and eating it too! For way too long I’ve been too nice, too fair, not training, not being a professional, and giving my opponents a fighting chance, making them look better than they really are. Well it’s no more mister nice guy because I’m really a cocky SOB sometimes. I need to be that person at times to create the pressure that I need to shine and that’s exactly what I’m going to do in Shreveport.

A win against Aguilar would be your third in a row. Where do you hope your career goes from here?

When I win that will be three wins in three months. I’d like my career to be UFC bound but I don’t know.. . I will be fighting in the UWF tournament on May 3^rd. That’s fights in three cities in 6 weeks. That’s my cup of tea. I will handle up and will be the UWF light weight Champion and receive the grand prize. My boy and training partner Mike B. Is in the same tournament at 170lbs and he will shine as well!
