Houston MMA’s Rey Trujillo and Akira Smith set for Ascend Combat card this Saturday in Shreveport

HOUSTON, TX, March 21, 2012 – There’s Houston MMA in action this Saturday night even though it’s not actually in town as two of the city’s beloved pros travel to Northern Louisiana to fight on the Ascend Combat: Nothing Personal card scheduled for Shreveport Municipal Auditorium. They’ll be joining several other Texans on the card as is customary in the Kim Cole Addison-run promotion.

Headlining this particular event is La Porte native Rey Trujillo (10-7), or TRU as he is known to his loyal fans. National fans should be familiar with Rey for the spectacular superman punch he landed in his last fight against Munil Adriano on HDNet’s Legacy Fighting Championship 10 event just last month in Houston. Now the owner of a 2-fight win streak after that last bout, the 10-7 Houstonian will be in for one tough challenge as he seeks to go for the trifecta against undefeated Longview, TX native Kevin Aguilar (4-0). Making his pro debut in December of 2010, Kevin has largely dominated as a pro so far, winning all his fights by TKO after a standout amateur career. Considering both their penchants for finishing fights, this bout between these two should no doubt produce fireworks and it will be interesting to see who comes out with the victory.

Speaking of exciting fighters, “The Afro Samurai” Akira Smith (0-1) makes his long-awaited return to the professional ranks at Ascend after over a year of honing his game after losing his pro debut to current Legacy contender Angel Huerta. He made his name prior to that while fighting for Lonestar Beatdown, the predecessor to the Legacy Amateur series. It was there where the 4OZ Fighter scored three TKO wins in a row that had many pundits in the area labeling him as a can’t-miss future star. This Saturday night he’ll be taking on debuting 22 year old pro Cole Nalley, a fighter who’ll be stepping into the cage with a 6-4 amateur record and an Ascend amateur belt to his credit.

The rest of the card should be equally exciting. If you plan on being in the area or want to make the trip to check out Rey and Akira in action live and in person, go to ascendcombat.tv for fight card info and ticket information.
