Xtreme Knockout (XKO) 14: Comprehensive Play-by-Play

ARLINGTON, TX, February 19, 2012 – Here’s our TXMMA play-by-play of all the action at Xtreme Knockout (XKO) 14 last night from The Gym in Arlington courtesy of our own Misty McMillan. Plenty of great fights last night with lots of fighters deserving of praise. Here’s a few awards for the top performances of the evening.

Fight of the Night – Brad Cox vs. Hayward Charles

Knockout of the Night – Donnie Bell vs. Keith Miner

TXMMA Play-by-Play of XKO 14 (Misty McMillan)

 

170lbs Aaron Culpepper (1-0 The Gym Arlington, TX) vs Antwan Williams (0-2)

 

Both men look calm and prepared. They appear to be equally matched physically. Antwan begins with a couple round houses as Aaron attacks with some crosses and a double leg take down. Aaron gets some good head punches in and draws blood. Antwan is still on the mat while he gets 2 head kicks in before Aaron moves to side mount and elbow strikes to Antwan’s head.  Aaron is caught in full guard as Antwan attempts a triangle only for Aaron to escape.  Antwan then attempts a strait arm bar but Aaron rolls out of it and ends up standing. End of round one with a significant amount of blood coming from Antwan’s head. Doctor is reviewing while cleanup is being done between rounds. It appears that the fight will continue.

Round 2 – Aaron lands a solid round house then attacks with a running double take down to take Antwan by surprise. He is pushed against the fence while Aaron makes solid contact with punches to the ribs. Aaron fights for side mount but gets his arm tied up as Antwan attempts a series of arm bars and triangles once again. Aaron succumbs to a triangle choke and taps.

Result – Antwan Williams over Aaron Culpepper by submission (triangle choke) at 1:50 of RD1.

 

 145lbs Casey Hudson (Pro-debut Fitness Fight Factory) vs Klayton Mai (1-0 Octagon MMA)

 

Both men look confident in the ring. Casey takes an aggressive stance during introductions. Casey starts off the fight with a solid round house however Klayton is unfazed.  Both are exchanging punches as they size each other up. Klayton comes in with a solid cross to Casey’s jaw. They continue to box and finally Casey attempts a takedown but ends his struggle with a body slam, landing in guard. Both struggle to get strikes in and finally Klayton is able to escape and stand up. Casey attempts a last minute double leg take down but Klayton defends with a strong cross face leading to a struggle that ends round 1

Casey strikes fast with another unsuccessful take down attempt. Both struggle for top position.  Again more stand up and take down attempts. Casey gets a solid punch in and continues to fight to remain on top while several knees and strikes are made by him. Klayton struggles to protect himself, appears dazed momentarily, and finally escapes. More struggles take place and Klayton finds himself on top and with a solid guillotine in place. Casey struggles but can’t escape and taps to end the match.

Result – Klayton Mai over Casey Hudson by submission (guillotine choke) at 2:41 of round 2.

 

185lbs Victor Reyna (pro-debut The Gym) vs Andre Kavanaugh (2-2 Austin, TX)

 

Both fighters are calm. Both strike with leg kicks at the same time as Victor falls and quickly gets back up. Victor takes the advantage and completes a take down at the fence. Victor holds top position and attempts several strikes that are not effective. They struggle and Andre is able to stand. Several head strikes are made and Victor makes solid contact with his cross, temporarily  stunning Andre as he loses balance. Victor takes advantage and takes him down to the mat with several elbow strikes to the head. Andre is able to regain his wits quickly and defend himself enough until the bell rings.

Victor comes out very aggressive with several combos as Andre attempts to do the same. Victor is able to again take Andre down to the mat and retain top half guard position. Andre looks tired and is attempting weak strikes to Victor’s ribs while Victor attempts an arm bar. Neither is effective until Andre is rolled to his stomach and Victor gets rear mount with both hooks in. He continues with the strikes to the head, however Andre continues to turtle up and tries to defend his head. Once again Andre is able to wait it out until the bell.

Start of round 3 and Victor looks determined to win this fight. Both produce a few sloppy punches until they fall back down to the mat. Victor obtains top full mount position, as Andre attempts to turtle. Victor continues with his attack to the head with elbow strikes and punches.  Andre finally cannot take it any longer and goes limp on the mat. Ref stops the fight. 

Result – Victor Reyna by knockout at 2:45 of round 3.

 

135lbs Tristan Grimsley (Pro Debut) vs Nelson Salas (2-0 Texas Fighting Syndicate)

 

Nelson enters the ring with the confidence knowing he has been here before. Tristan appears ready to fight. He comes in fast  with several strikes and a takedown attempt.  Tristan gets the advantage and looks to complete a knee bar. Nelson struggles to get out of it and finally does. Both struggle for the advantage until Nelson jumps guard and hits the mat hard. Both continue to roll as Nelson makes contact to Tristan’s head with strikes.  Tristan is able to stand, however is pushed to the fence by Nelson as he continues his attack with knee strikes. Tristan is able to defend until the bell.

Tristan kicks and Nelson grabs his leg but falls into a guillotine and is taken to the ground. Tristan takes rear mount and holds on to the rear naked choke. Nelson is fights his way out of it and turtles, however struggles to get Tristan off his back.  Nelson ends up back in rear mount until he finally turns his hips enough to obtain top guard position. They continue to struggle for advantage until the bell rings.

Both men are visibly tired.  Tristan kicks as Nelson makes contact with a hook. Tristan attempts a takedown but Nelson tries to retain an advantage by pulling guard.  Nelson attempts a triangle choke as Tristan fights to defend. Nelson holds on and is able to execute as Tristan taps.

Result – Nelson Salas over Tristan Grimsley by submission (triangle choke) at 1:23 of round 3.

 

170lbs Andrew Parker (1-0 Octagon MMA) vs Aldo Davila (pro-debut The Gym)

 

Aldo appears to have a slight weight advantage over Andrew as they enter the ring. Andrew blocks a leg kick and attempts a takedown but Aldo lands into the fence, preventing him from executing. Both fight for an advantage position. After a few moments, Andrew is able to grab and hold rear mount after Aldo attempted to muscle an advantage. Andrew sinks in a rear naked choke hold and after a brief struggle, Aldo tapped.

Result – Andrew Parker over Aldo Davila by submission (RNC) at 1:13 of round 1.

 

150lbs Burt McDonald (1-2 Texas Fighting Syndicate) vs Johnathan Wise (1-2 Garland Police Boxing Gym)

 

Both fighters appear confident and evenly matched.  They both come out aggressive. Johnathan throws a powerful front push kick and Burt lands against the chains but recovers quickly and comes out swinging. Burt advances to a double leg take down but gets caught in Johnathan’s guillotine hold. He is eventually able to fight out of it but has drained his energy. Burt attempts several body slams but they have little effect on Johnathan. Burt is able to hold full mount position while Johnathan defends until the bell.

Burt comes out strong with a solid leg kick and left hook which stings. He takes Johnathan to the mat and is able to get rear mount advantage. He fights to hold onto the naked choke but Johnathan is able to turtle up. Burt holds his rear mount position and throws strikes to the head until he can regain the rear naked choke. Johnathan struggles to turtle once again but is pushed to the mat on his stomach and Burt locks in the choke. Ref stops the fight. 

Result – Burt McDonald over Johnathan Wise by submission (RNC) at 1:31 of round 2.

 

175lbs Chris Feist (2-0 pro Team Takedown/The Gym) vs Sean Ward (2-4 pro The Grapplers Lair)

 

Although Sean has more fights under his belt, Chris appears to have all the confidence. Sean comes out strong but Chris ties him up at the fence and takes him down landing in half guard. Both fight for position as Sean gets his hook in and attempts a knee bar. Chris is able to roll and escape to standing position. Sean comes in and gets several knee strikes to the head. Chris pushes Sean to the fence and pins him there while getting the take down.  Chris struggles to keep top position but Sean is able to get back to his feet.  Chris struggles with knee kick attempts while Sean holds until the bell.

Both have their hands up and Sean comes in strong. They exchange kicks and jabs until Chris completes a double leg take down. Sean turtles and regains standing position while Chris continues to push him against the fence and throws out several knee strikes. Sean is pushed back down to the mat and struggles to gain an advantage. He is able to defend until the bell.

Sean comes in fast for a take down and Chris sprawls as they hit heads. Chris uses the fence again until he is able to complete a body slam and lands in half guard. He passes while Sean holds on to move to turtle and eventually get back up. Sean again finds himself against the fence defending knee strikes. Chris uses his strength to get Sean back down on the mat. They fight for advantage until the bell.

Result – Chris Feist over Sean Ward by unanimous decision.

 

180lbs Brad Cox (2-0 Mohlers MMA) vs Hayward “The Hybrid” Charles (3-2 Ironside/pur-fit and Genesis)

 

Brad comes into the ring with the crowd advantage. He appears to have a strength advantage as well over Hayward.  Hayward comes into the ring with a smile on his face.  He attempts a takedown but Brad muscles out. Hayward finds himself backing up and decides to jump guard. Brad attempts several strikes to Hayward’s head with no attempt to pass guard. Hayward struggles against Brad’s power punches but is able to get to his feet briefly to attempt another take down. He ends up on top and is able to throw some good strikes to Brad’s head, however Brad muscles out and Hayward somehow received a solid cut above his left eye during the struggle for position.  They both fight for position as Brad attacks and gets kicked back by Hayward. They do not reconnect before the bell rings.

They both come in strong and Hayward goes for another take down and is able to lock up Brad’s legs and crawl up to rear position. He is unable to hold onto it as Brad reverses and regains top guard. Brad continues with body and head strikes as Hayward continues to hold on and move back and forth from turtle to guard. Brad continues to sit in the guard and throw strikes until the bell.

Both fighters are visibly tired but are coming in with all they have left. Hayward fights for a single leg take down only to find himself back in bottom guard defending head strikes. He is able to push Brad away and briefly get to his feet before attempting another take down, pushing Brad against the fence. Hayward is able to get full mount and throw some of his own strikes. Brad sits up and turns . Hayward sees his opportunity to gain control with rear mount. He struggles to hold onto it while attempting to strike, but Brad is able to turn his hips and regain top guard position. Brad finishes the round with a few more elbow strikes to the head before the bell rings.

Result – Brad Cox over Hayward Charles by unanimous decision.

 

155lbs Donnie Bell (3-1 Metroflex MMA) vs Keith Miner (4-2 Mohlers MMA)

 

Donnie appears to have the strength advantage for this fight. Keith is confident in his corner. Donnie comes in swinging and pushes Keith against the fence. Keith comes back with his own flurry and makes contact with Donnie’s face with a round house. Donnie does not appear stunned and continues his attack of combinations to Keith’s head. Keith loses his balance and falls to the mat. Donnie takes the advantage by continuing with head strikes. Ref stops the fight.

Result – Donnie Bell over Keith Miner by knockout at :44 of round 1.

 

185lbs Ciprian Hangan (2-0 Dallas MMA 300) vs Jay Jay Sanchez (2-0)

 

Jay Jay enters the ring with quiet confidence. Ciprianhas a smile on his face as he acknowledges the crowd. Both appear to have similar body types.  As they size each other up they each attempt strikes and leg kicks. They tie up and briefly hit the mat before Ciprian is able to get back up to his feet. Jay Jay comes in strong as they again exchange crosses and hooks. He is able to get a solid hook in and lands on the mat hard. He sees his advantage and goes in for side control. Sanchez lands a few more punches to Ciprian’s head before the ref stopped the fight.  Ciprian got up quickly and immediately protested saying he was unaffected and ref should have not stopped the fight. 

Result – Jay Jay Sanchez over Ciprian Hangan by TKO at :59 of round 1.
