The Birth of the Legacy Amateur Series

The Legacy Amateur Series was born on February 18, 2011 after 19 successful events held under the moniker of the “Lonestar Beatdown.” Through the end of 2010, LSBD was the original home of many of Legacy’s current pro stars – guys like Ricardo Talavera, Bubba Bush, Jeff Rexroad, Jonathan Harris, and many more.

This past year, 4 debuting professionals made the jump from the Legacy Amateur Series to the pro level with Evert Gutierrez, David Armas, Chop Rucker, and Armando Servin all fighting at Legacy Amateur events before stepping in to the pro ranks in 2011.

Next year, a planned year-long tournament series promises to up this number even more as Legacy Amateur looks to become the official feeder league for its professional counterpart.

2011 Highlights – Knockouts

In 2012, there were plenty of technical knockout (TKO) finishes at the Legacy Amateur Series but only 2 fights made the TLDR cut in terms of officially being ruled knockout finishes. Amazingly enough, both came in the same event at the House of Blues this past August in Dallas at Legacy Amateur Series 5. In that event, Daniel Trevino and Lior Shporen were the big finishers of the night with Trevino taking out Jay Nichols in the first bout of the evening while Shporen finished his bout with a devastating KO of Terrell Henson later on in the evening. Lior’s knockout in particular was devastating enough to be nominated for Amateur Knockout of the Year honors in the 2011 TXMMA Awards.

2011 Highlights – Submissions

With 17 submissions on the year it’s a challenge to pick a favorite but there were plenty that impressed us througout the year. For starters, Evert Gutierrez started the year off with a nice textbook transition into the RNC in February. Tucker Dierksheide over John Rodriguez and Rob Butler over Joshua Obena (fastest sub of the year) both impressed in May while Micah Williams did likewise in July, taking out Jabari Shakur and celebrating emphatically afterwards much to the amusement of everybody in press row. Finishing off our list of favorites where two thrilling subs with Alex Melendez pulling off the triangle on Casey Williams at Legacy Amateur Series 5 while Charles Lloyd choked out Omar Khosravi at Legacy Amateur Series 6 to finish off the year.
