November 11, 2011 – With little over twenty-four left until quite possibly the biggest night in UFC history, we figure it’s high time to break down the featured main event of the evening between heavyweight Cain Velasquez and formidable challenger Junior dos Santos.
For those of you that didn’t see them yesterday, we offered a preview and predictions of the UFC on FOX undercard so give them a look if you haven’t already. Now let’s get to the business and give our thoughts on who wins the big one.
For the UFC Heayweight Championship: Cain Velasquez (9-0) vs. Junior dos Santos (13-1)
True enough, this fight is poised to deliver and showcase two of the sport’s best fighting over the pinnacle of heavyweight of the heavyweight division. Who will stand on top of the summit remains to be seen but the one thing that is certain is that both guys deserve to be here. That much was shown time and again in the preceding weeks prior to this fight, with both FOX and the UFC pushing these guys as not only special athletes, but also exceptional human beings who aspire to compete and win for all the right reasons.
“From both of us, we have exciting fighting styles,” states Velasquez. “We don’t go out there and put on boring fights. We’re both going to go forward. That’s what fans are going to see, that’s what people who haven’t seen this before are going to see on Saturday.”
True enough, this matchup between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos should deliver. After all, they’re the two best heavyweights in the UFC at this point after having earned their way here.
The champion, Cain Velasquez, enters this bout having beaten the likes of Cheick Kongo, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar while staying undefeated at 9-0. Meanwhile, the challenger Junior dos Santos come in having won all of his own UFC bouts on his way to this title shot with wins over other top guys like Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin.
It’ll be a close one. Velasquez has been out of commission due to injury for over a year. Will he exhibit ring rust or lack the cardio that’s always been his calling card? When facing a guy like Junior dos Santos, a lack of timing is not something you want to suffer from. You’d be liable to get knocked into next week if that happens. That’s something that almost happened two years ago the last time Cain faced a striker of Junior’s caliber in Cheick Kongo. It’s not inconceivable that he could rocked again after having been out of the game for so long. Nonetheless, to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man and Cain has yet to be beat. He’s the slight favorite for a reason and will look to take “Cigano” down and wear him out. That could very well happen but so could an uppercut straight up the middle to end things on FOX and bring the title back to Brazil.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Prediction: Junior dos Santos over Cain Velasquez to win the UFC heavyweight title in round two.
