OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, November 1, 2011 – When it comes to outward perceptions looking in on the world of MMA, and as archaic as this point of view may seem, there are still many who perceive the sport’s athletes to be no more than simple-minded brutes, concentrated on nothing more than bringing violence and destruction upon anybody that crosses their path.

While you can’t change the opinions of some (read: New York Assemblyman Bob Reilly), there’s also a light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a paradigm shift that’s being created thanks to tireless work of many positive-minded individuals all around the world, Police officers, teachers, and even middle-aged doctors now proudly participate in an activity once thought of as nothing more than a remnant of the dark ages. Legitimate media outlets now cover what was once considered too barbaric to be considered a sport. Madison Avenue advertisers are now sponsoring athletes and organizations previously left to only companies like say, Condom Depot. And even conglomerates like FOX and Viacom are buying in as the world of MMA pushes towards mainstream acceptance.

With his progression has come the age of a new type of fighter. One that’s been training all his life in any number of disciplines while also embodying the elements that make the sport itself great – qualities like hard work, humility, discipline, and the desire to capitalize on any opportunity that comes one’s way – in or out of the cage.

Take the case of Rob Wood for example.

Gearing up for his second MMA fight at Cage Combat 6 in Houston, this fighter has also been concurrently readying himself to take the GRE in preparation for graduate school and a better shot at the real world in the event that the UFC doesn’t come calling. A Christian in his beliefs, Rob has been working diligently with the mantra that he should take advantage of every opportunity that comes his way while working hard not to waste a single minute. Sounds like the prototype for an “All-American” type of fighter and the new breed of athlete in MMA.

Time will tell whether he can prove himself as that with a victory this Friday night in Humble. In preparation for that moment, we caught up with Rob and spoke to him about this fight, his other priorities, and what he is seeking to accomplish in competition and in life.

Rob, thanks for taking the time to talk to us in the midst of school and training. Before we get to the fight, tell us a little bit about yourself. Who are you outside of training and MMA?

University of Oklahoma Sooners

First and foremost, I’m a Christian! I am also a student pursuing graduate school. Outside of training I would consider myself a pretty easy going guy, but like most athletes I am very competitive. Everything I do I try to do it with a positive attitude.

How do you balance your priorities with training, school, and everything else?

It can seem somewhat overwhelming at times, especially this last week. I have been studying for the GRE and training for this fight, so I haven’t had much down time at all. I like it that way though. If I’m not busy with something then I feel like I’m wasting away time. At the end of the day I am very thankful and blessed to have the opportunities that lay ahead.

When did you get involved with the combat sports and what do you love about competition?

I have wrestled all my life but I didn’t get into BJJ until after I graduated high school. This past year I have spent more of my time training MMA. The main thing about MMA that I love is that it’s the purest form of competition. It is your god giving abilities and hard work against your opponents’. It doesn’t get much better than that!

What’s it like training at Team Lovato? Who helps you most up there in OKC?

Team Lovato | www.okbjj.com

Training at Lovato’s is great. I am able to train with world class competitors and get the opportunity to learn from one of the best jiu jitsu fighters in the world in Rafael Lovato Jr. One of the best things about training at Lovato’s are my fellow students. My teammates and other students that I train with make working hard easy, because they create such a positive atmosphere.

How would you describe yourself as a fighter at this point?

I am definitely a work in progress, but I’m getting there.

What’s it been like getting ready for Friday night? Who’s coming down to Houston with you for this one?

The training for this camp has been good. I have been getting beat up on frequently so I’ll be ready for anything that comes my way Friday night. Unfortunately, since the fight is in Houston a lot of my friends can’t make it but some are still making the trip down to support me.

What do you know about your opponent?

Studying | Personal Archives

You know, I don’t know much about my opponent other than he is a southpaw. Either way, I am looking for a submission or KO in this fight. If it goes the distance then I’ll feel like I haven’t done my job.

What are your near-term goals after this fight, in and out of the cage?

Personally I just want to be the best at whatever I do in and outside the cage. My main goal is that I don’t waste a single day or opportunity. Every day holds numerous opportunities for me to improve myself as a fighter, but more importantly as a person.

Any last words for your opponent before Cage Combat 6?

Nope, Not really. Not much of a trash talker.

What are for the fans? Or anyone else?

To all the MMA fans in Houston…Get your popcorn ready, because it’s gonna be a show!!! I want to thank the crew at Lovato’s – James Head, Rafael Lovato Jr., Mills, Nick Foust, Jared Hess, Brandon Crumm, and Kevin Turcios, for helping me get ready for this fight. Also, I want to thank Kevin Malahy and Kirk Suiter at Crossfit Native for taking my workouts to the next level in preparation for this fight. Thanks Mike and TXMMA.com! God bless!
