CORPUS CHRISTIE, TX, August 1, 2011 – Things are heating up in the flyweight division around Texas with several fighters jockeying for position in the sport’s lightest male weight class. As it stands, there are three fighters at the top of the heap in this division: (1) Will Campuzano, a former UFC/WEC fighter looking to get back to the big leagues, (2) Chad Robichaux, a Bellator/Legacy FC veteran dropping down to the division for the first time, and (3) Jimmy Flick – a twenty-one year old phenom out of Corpus Christie to looking to make his way up the ranks after going 8-0 as an amateur and 3-0 in his first three pro fights.
Time will tell how this picture shakes out and which of three will make it to the UFC as they introduce 125’ers to their roster in the near future. However, one thing for certain is that some of the debate surrounding who truly is the top 125’er around will shake out on September 16th as Flick and Robichaux meet at Legacy FC 8 in Houston.
“This kid Jimmy Flick I’m fighting has a big surprise coming,” Robichaux said about their upcoming fight in a recent interview with TXMMA.com. “I’m not too fond of him. In fact, I think he’s a punk and the fact that he’s been publicly calling me out ticks me off. He’s a disrespectful little turd in my opinion. When we get in that cage, I am gonna teach that young boy some manners. I plan on coming out of my corner like a slingshot and if he doesn’t duck he’s getting two right in his eyes. Either way he’ll realize what he’s been asking for all this time.”
Those are definitely some strong words from the Houstonian regarding this one. We recently spoke to Jimmy “The Brick” Flick to get his own thoughts on their upcoming fight.
“I’m really pumped up about it,” Jimmy said about the opportunity to finally fight Chad Robichaux. I want to go out there and show everybody that I am the top 125’er here in Texas. If you look at all my fights as a pro, I haven’t fought anybody with less than six professional fights. The reason I wanted to fight him as that he’s 11-2 and he’s been talking about going down to 125 where I am. Well I love testing myself. If I can go out there and beat him, that’ll show everybody once again that I’m the guy to watch out for, not him or anybody else.”
Adding to that, Jimmy says age and experience won’t play a factor in this fight. As a matter of fact, he plans on training harder than ever for it.
“I may be young but still… I’ve been in this sport a long time. Even from when I was a kid, I’ve been wrestling all my life so that’s pretty much gotten me ready for a long future in this sport. I’m going to out there and show Chad Robo what I’ve got. He thinks I’m a kid, called me a punk or whatever… That’s okay. I’ll show him. I showed what I had in my fight with Humberto after he did his trash-talking and Robo’s not going to be any different. I do my trash-talking in the cage so everybody can see the results with their own eyes.
“I’m going to train hard for this fight too. I plan on working with some of the top grapplers in the world, possibly in California. From what everybody says, Robichaux has some pretty good grappling. I’m going to work on my own submission game, improve my wrestling, and do everything else I need to do to get ready for this fight. I’ve got a good team pushing me over at Paragon. Hector Munoz, Roger Narvaez, Josh Rios, Santos Rosales, even my brother Danny and my dad, they all train with me and help me get ready. I work with a lot of bigger guys and they all have great jiu-jitsu. Chad Robichaux’s not going to bother me in the cage.”
In closing, Jimmy left us with a few words in direct response to his upcoming opponent, Chad Robichaux.
“I can’t wait to step into the cage with you Robo. We’re going to be standing straight across from each other when the time comes. When that happens, you can come out with your slingshot or whatever else you’ve got. I’ll come out like the twenty-one year old kid that I am and do my thing. I hope you train as hard as I do because I want the best Chad Robo there is when I go out there to finish you.”
Texas, it sure sounds like we’ve got a fight on our hands.
