Turning pro after winning all seven of his amateur bouts by submission, Jimmy “The Brick” Flick has gone 3-0 since turning professional en route to becoming one of the hottest prospects in Texas when it comes to MMA’s lightest weight class. Looking to make his way up the rankings and joining a chorus of other Texas fighters including Will Campuzano, Johnny Bedford, and more, Flick has been very vocal about fighting Robichaux over the course of the past year.
For the most part, those challenges fell on deaf ears while Chad Robichaux and his management team pursued bigger fights on the national stage, like his Bellator 41 non-title affair with Bellator champion Zach Makovsky. Losing that bout by decision in Yuma, Arizona, Robichaux came back to Houston intent on following a new career path that included taking one more bout at 135 before dropping to flyweight and making it into the UFC.
By all accounts, that strategy made all the sense in the world except for the fact that nobody told Robo’s opponent Jonathan Mackles. The Louisianan was able to upset the favored Robichaux and win by submission in under a minute at last weeekend’s Legacy FC 7 on HDNet. According to Robichaux, an illegal knee impacted the result of that bout and his team has filed a protest with the state athletic commission to get that decision overturned into a no-contest. Time will tell whether that protest is successful but according to Chad, it has no bearing on his mindset heading into his recently-scheduled bout with Jimmy Flick.
“Whether or not my fight (with Jonathan Mackles) is ruled a no-contest, I’m still disappointed with myself,” said Robichaux. “That illegal knee, I shouldn’t have let him throw it in the first place. I believe I got complacent with some of the new skill sets I have built and that I went into the fight way too relaxed. I got caught off-guard. That’s not going to happen again.”
Finally deciding to fight one of his Texas challengers on his own terms and not based on the demands of others, Robichaux is looking to make an example out of Jimmy “The Brick” when the two take the stage at Legacy FC 8.
“I’m going back to my old ways of fighting like a psychopath this September. That’s what got me to 11-0 and that is the style that fits me best,” Robo said about what he’ll be like when he steps into the cage with his young opponent.
”My glove touching days are over. This kid Jimmy Flick I’m fighting has a big surprise coming… I’m not too fond of him. In fact, I think he’s a punk and the fact that he’s been publicly calling me out ticks me off. He’s a disrespectful little turd in my opinion. When we get in that cage, I am gonna teach that young boy some manners. I plan on coming out of my corner like a slingshot and if he doesn’t duck he’s getting two right in his eyes. Either way he’ll realize what he’s been asking for all this time.
