HOUSTON, TX, July 14, 2011 – One of the most recent scheduled fights for the Legacy Fighting Championship 7 event just one week away features an exciting undercard featherweight matchup between Alex Black and Jared Chafee.
Both fighters have impressed on the amateur circuit on their way towards the Legacy Fighting Championship. An assistant instructor for Gracie Barra North Houston, Chaffee went 3-0 in the amateur ranks while finish two of his opponents. Bushi Ban’s Alex Black was even busier, fighting six times as an amateur and winning four en route to his professional debut for the Legacy organization in November 2010 where he beat a tough Greg Bellomy via TKO.
Since that fight, Black has undergone some adversity in facing a murderer’s row of strikers in his next two fights. After his pro debut, Black took on an IXFA bout against San Antonio’s Gilbert “Pit Bull” Jimenez and lost via first round TKO. Not wanting to rest on his laurels, he would then return to Legacy to face an even more seasoned-veteran in Tim Snyder, performing impressively in a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance while dropping a close split decision that is still talked about to this day.
Now looking to make his way back and even his record, Alex seems more motivated than ever. We recently spoke to the Bushi Ban fighter to get his thoughts on his Legacy FC 7 fight and everything else.
Alex, it’s good to see you on this Legacy FC 7 on July 22nd. I remember just a few weeks ago, we were talking about how it has been to find a fight. How does it feel to be on the card next Friday?
How have you kept yourself in shape with no fights scheduled?
I’ve stayed in pretty good shape and always try to keep myself at least at 80% even when I don’t have a fight scheduled. I put on a little weight after the Tim Snyder fight but I’ve taken it off slowly and I’m back down to my normal walking weight so the (weight) cut shouldn’t be too bad.
Your Legacy FC 6 war with Tim Snyder was one of the most exciting fights on the card. Do you think that’s the reason Legacy FC decided to bring you onto this one?
Yeah, I think so. I’ve always put on pretty good shows for Legacy and have had good exciting fights there, even as an amateur on their kickboxing cards. I hope that’s why they like me – because I always put on a good show. I like to bring quite a bit of people in also who come out and support me.
What did you take from that last fight with Tim Snyder?
With two years under your belt as a fighter, how do you think you’ve evolved since your amateur days?
I’ve completely changed. I’ve grown physically and mentally. I’m a little bit bigger now than what I was as an amateur. I think my standup and ground have both gotten better and overall, I want to continue growing.
Looking at your opponent, what do you expect from Jared Chaffee next Friday?
From what I’ve seen, he’s a really good fighter. He brings his A-game every time. He’s got good kickboxing and good ground so I believe he’s a good overall fighter like me. Because of how we match up, I think this will turn out to be a really exciting fight.
Where do you think you have the advantage and how do you see this fight unfolding?
My advantage will probably be in the standup, most likely. Either way, I don’t know where the fight is going to go. I never really make too much of a gameplan out of it because I want to be prepared for it. If he takes me down or I take him down, I want to be prepared. If it stays standing, I want to be ready for that. I’m not sure where the fight will go but I’m ready wherever it takes place.
With your record being 1-2 now while facing three tough opponents, does that give any added pressure to perform?
