Shark Fights 16 Recap – Luis Luna and Artenas Young Make Good on Pre-Fight Proclamations!

ODESSA, TX, June 26, 2011Shark Fights 16 came and went last night in Odessa and it looks like Luis Luna kept his word from his pre-fight interview here on TXMMA.com, defending at home in West Texas by submitting the visiting Danny Salinas via guillotine choke in the round to up his record to 6-2.

“I’m always looking to represent West Texas,” Luna told Jonathan Hull of MyWestTexas.com in his post-fight interview. “It felt like a home crowd for me tonight. I take a lot of pride in where I’m from and I’m glad I could put it down for them tonight.”

Based on reports from those in attendance, Luna kept the pressure on the South Texas (Edinburg) native the entire fight, threatening with a variety of submissions before finally forcing the boxer to tap out to the delight of the hometown crowd in attendance.

Also performing well on the card was Houston native Artenas “Machine Gun” Young, who also made good on his own pre-fight comments to TXMMA.com by defeating Elvis “The King” Mutapcic. Young was able to use his much improved all-around skills via his training at Jackson’s MMA to stymie the attack from his Iowa-based opponent and bloody him up for the victory. With this win, Young moves to 7-3 overall with his last two fights being wins over impressive opponents in Mutapcic and highly-touted wrestler Kyle Bracey from Illinois. Looking ahead from this bout, it is possible that Young could move into title contention so stay tuned for more from the loud-speaking Houstonian.

Elsewhere on the card, Jarrett Jones performed well in his hometown submitting James Chandler via triangle choke in the second round. Also performing well at Shark Fights 16 were Jared Downing, who moved his record to 6-0 with a spectacular KO over experienced opponent Ran Weathers, and Joseph Sandoval of Big Head MMA, who also stayed undefeated with a TKO over Odessa’s own Randy Hinds.

Be on the lookout for this event to air on FUEL TV via tape delay in just a few weeks. Stay tuned for photos from Shark Fights 16, coming soon here on TXMMA.com.
