Looking to “Whoop” Up on Someone – “Fighting Aggie” Bubba Bush set to take on Andrew Craig for the Legacy 185 Title!

The Middleweight Title is on the line on April 9, 2011 at the Legacy Fighting Championships as College Station’s Fightin’ Aggie Bubba Bush of BVMMA steps into the cage at the Arena Theater to take on Team Tooke’s Andrew Craig in a battle of undefeated bulls in the 185 division.

Recently deciding to make a serious go at Professional MMA after three years in between his first and second fight, Bubba Bush will be taking on his biggest challenge yet with this upcoming fight. Originally set to take on fellow top prospect Artenas “Machine Gun” Young, a late switch in the matchup now has changed the course of his preparations in that he will instead be taking on a seasoned opponent already a champion in Andrew Craig, who most recently defeated Houston MMA legend Jon Kirk in the IXFA this past February and boasts a combined ammy/pro record of 8-0.

Why take on such a monumental task in only his third bout in four years, you ask? Well, an Aggie would probably answer that question saying, “”From the outside looking in you can’t understand it, and from the inside looking out you can’t explain it.” Such is the life in College Station, where the A&M culture permeates. Win or lose, those BCS crazies don’t know how to do anything else but give 110% effort.

One thing is for sure though. Coming April 9th, there will be a sea of maroon barreling southbound on Highway 6 as Bubba Bush and his proverbial 12th man wrecking crew come to Houston to do battle with Andrew Craig and figure out who the Legacy 185 champion is.

Thanks for taking the time to do the interview prior to your title bout at Legacy FC. For Houston fans that haven’t gotten the chance to see you fight yet, can you tell them a little bit about your training background?

I come from a Virginia wrestling heritage and wrestled for seven years there so most of my training was out of Texas. They’ve got some excellent wrestling programs out there. Since moving to Texas, I’ve been training for four years with Brazos Valley Mixed Martial Arts with David McClung.

How about outside the cage? Any other hobbies?

Oh man, none that I should probably talk about. <laughing> Yeah, I do war gaming out here.

How would your your friends and family describe you if we asked them to?

They’d probably say I’ve got a lot of focus, steady, determined, that sort of thing.

You’ve had two pro fights to date, with the last coming in July of last year at Legacy in a very impressive win over a seasoned-veteran in Chris Spicer. Tell us a little bit about that experience. Did that fight go as expected?

The fight went about as well as we could hope. Obviously we were versed in different strengths and that was where we were going to clash that would determine the outcome. I find that usually in MMA, the fighter with the best wrestling determines where you are going to fight and the person with the best jiu-jitsu or kickboxing usually determines where its going to end right? It was a great experience just because I was jumping up so high in the ranks against someone who had so much experience and so many wins under his belt. It was very typical, you know, to think you have what it takes to go in there but not really know if you’re really in over your head so it was very comforting to have such a good win and have that.

Your first fight was three years prior to that. Why such a long break in between?

It’s a dangerous sport and people are out to get you so if you’re not doing it, you know, full-heartedly… its not something you just want to half-ass. I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it as a career. (at the time) I was just doing it as a hobby so I wasn’t ready to jump in the cage with animals like (Andrew) Craig and Chris Spicer.

What motivates you to make a go at this sport now? Do you plan on trying to make a career out of this?

Sure. Absolutely. I’ve got a gym now so I want to do it for my guys at Brazos Valley Mixed Martial Arts and I’ll like to make more of a career out of it instead of just make it a hobby.

You’re taking your next fight against a new opponent now with the original bout being scrapped in favor of this title fight with Andrew Craig. What do you think about that switch and do you consider Craig a step up in competition?

Oh man, you’re gonna get me in trouble. < laughing > No, I think I’m going to fight Artenas some day anyways so I’m sure I’ll see both them.

All in all, what do you think of Andrew as an opponent for you?

It’s a great matchup. I do think he’s a bit more well-rounded than Artenas. With the original fight, I think whether Artenas beat me or I beat him, it would probably end up looking more like a one-sided fight probably. With Craig, I think he’s very well-rounded so I think he will meet me wherever we end up.

Without giving away any of your game plan, how do you plan on beating Andrew Craig?

Win or lose, after this fight, what’s next foryou?

I’m sure I’ll probably be defending against Artenas after he wins his next fight if I win with Craig. They plan on giving him the shot next so that’s it.
