Press Release – “Tapping Out Cancer” at the IBJJF with Elite MMA Baytown and the American Cancer Society

For Immediate Release:

This year at the IBJJF’s Houston International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament, one team will be playing for a lot more than medals and recognition.

Elite MMA Baytown, instructing mixed martial arts and self-defense in the Baytown area since February 2008, has decided to dedicate their participation in the competition to the cause of cancer research, detection, treatment, and education via their “Tapping Out Cancer” initiative in concert with the American Cancer Society.

This all started when fifteen-year-old Baytown resident and Elite MMA student Damian Mitchell decided to get involved in giving back to his community via this cause. An orange belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one day Damien decided he could no longer sit idly by and watch suffer over cancer so he started a “Relay for Life” team. Not stopping now his goal is to get more people involved in his fight to create more birthdays and fight cancer, according to his father, Tim.

With Damien serving as the catalyst, the team is now focusing on “Tapping out Cancer” via enrolling one of Elite’s top grapplers and Team ZTS competition team member Julian Vega to raise money for the American Cancer Society in a fundraiser by competing at the IBJJF tournament.

Interested contributors are asked to contribute $1 for 3rd place finish, $3 for 2nd place finish, and $5 for every 1st place finish Julian can accomplish in order to add to in fight to “tap out cancer.” Of course, charitable donations in any amount are also appreciated as every bit helps in providing more for the lives of others.

“Relay for life has been fighting cancer for years. Now thanks to a 15-year -old with a big heart the Elite MMA family has joined the fight to help achieve that goal,” says instructor Frost Murphy of Elite MMA Baytown.
