ÿ
Hidalgo, TX
–The International Fighting Championships (IFC) comes to the Rio Valley with “Rumble On The Rio”, at the Dodge Arena in McAllen on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events initially stirred controversy due to its “no holds barred” billing. Now Mixed Martial Arts has become one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, due to the IFC’s introduction of rules and time limits in 1996. This event will be the first IFC event held in Texas.
Allowed techniques include striking with the hands and feet, throws, takedowns, chokes, armbars, leglocks and other submission holds. Rounds are 5 minutes long.
“Rumble on the Rio” will see some of the best fighters in the world colliding. A scheduled 10+ fights are on a card featuring three spectacular Superfights including the main event of the evening, an explosive heavyweight Superfight match up between one of MMA’s hardest hitting and well known fighters, 240 pound Paul Buentello, and a very tough 255 pound Chris Gillian. Gillian has looking for the opportunity to take Buentello on and Paul says “He’s been telling everyone what he could do to me in the cage. Talk’s cheap. Let’s do it December 6 th in the IFC.” Also featured in a heavyweight Superbattle, Gary Marshall (265 pounds) out of Phoenix will face another 265 pounder, Jonathon Ivey of Houston. The semi main event will be a much-anticipated Middleweight (185 lbs) match up between Steve Heath of Lodi, CA and Dave Phillips of Austin. Steve is the former IFC World Light Heavyweight Champion who dropped down in weight after that title became the property of Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. Among the other exciting match-ups on the card will be a cross border contest featuring Olaf Alfonso of Ensenada, Mexico and Amarillo’s Isaias Martinez.
