INTERVIEW WITH DUANE STEVENSON
Part II

INTENSITY: How do you deal with life on the road when you are competing?

Duane: My wife is very supportive of me so it makes it much easier. My wife and kids don’t always get to travel with me so I do get homesick at times. But at the same time they give me a lot of structure in my life and I always look forward to going home. Sometimes I feel like I have no peace, I am always running. When I am traveling and competing I am always on someone else’s time, not my time so even though it’s my job of course I always look forward to going home.

INTENSITY: You train people and give seminars. What kind of content is covered and what is your near term schedule?

Duane: Well I am looking to do a seminar this summer, probably will be for MMA and NHB conditioning. Like I said I do teach bodyguards and law enforcement personnel but their classes are much different than someone looking to get into the ring. They are in life or death situations with an enemy all the time versus training for a potentially long bout in the ring. But either way, beginners and advanced people can both learn from me. In my seminars I am not a drill instructor, I actually get in there and train with everyone. Some people think I can’t do a lot of things but I really can do much more than you might think, I have done a 50 yard dash in 39 seconds, on crutches! I can swim well too, I was a lifeguard at age 15. I teach whether my knees are hurting or not, I have a steel rod and 3 pins in my knee from a training injury.

INTENSITY: What is your nutritional schedule like?

Duane: Like I said, I don’t diet, I just eat a healthy diet. I try to eat a lot of meat and vegetables, greens are good of course. I used to eat whatever I wanted and I was really heavy and out of shape compared to how I am now. I do use supplements from time to time, I like a good protein powder or MRP, also I have taken some of your bcaa powder before a workout and notice my energy is up and my soreness is definitely less. Conditioning of course plays a part for sure but eating right fuels myself for the task at hand.

INTENSITY: Do you have any final thoughts and what is your biggest accomplishment to date?

Duane: My biggest accomplishment is really everything I have achieved, I mean heart is why people are fascinated with me, not my physical limitations. People have beat me and people will beat me, but everyone mentions how much heart I have. I have a lot to give and people can learn from me, I have been in real life situations where I was being robbed and I had to escape this without the use of my legs. Some people may think I am getting noticed because of being disabled but it’s not true. I’m not a porcelain doll, heart is what gets attention.

INTENSITY: Very impressive Duane! Thank you for the interview and your time. Last thing before we go let me get the name of your school in case any of our readers want to get in touch with you.

Duane: Sure, it’s the House of Warriors. Also I would like to say i am available for martial arts shows and charity event etc. and I am doing a charity submission match soon. Also I would like to say thank you to the people who have been supporting me like Coach Davies, my bjj trainer Calvin, tnt gym, Kevin Rouse submission wrestling dungal champion and Enson Inoue of the Purebred Gym in Japan. If people are interested in seminars I can be reached at MonsterWarriorCrosstraining@hotmail.com and I also teach knife and combat stickfighting.

INTENSITY: Sounds great Duane, thanks again.

Duane: Sure, no problem.
